Future Earth Research School, High-Level Education for a Sustainable Future and Green Jobs

The FERS School has been selected to participate in the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28 UAE) in Expo City Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as part of the side events hosted by the Italian Pavilion.
The event Future Earth Research School – High-Level Education for a Sustainable Future and Green Jobs will take place on Monday, 11 December, from 9.30 to 11.00 a.m.(GMT+4), and will count on the participation of representatives of the School’s Scientific Committee, the Emilia Romagna Region, the School’s management, and lectures and students from the different courses.

Antonio Navarra, CMCC President and FERS Scientific Coordinator, will kick off the event, which will be a unique opportunity to learn about the school’s main objectives and the remarkable accomplishments of the past two years through the words of Giulia Galluccio, FERS Director.
A highlight of the event will be an engaging roundtable discussion, bringing together esteemed former lecturers and alumni.

• Where is global warming in relation to the Long Term Global Goal?

To interpret 2023’s extreme temperatures in the context of the Paris Agreement, natural variability and whether we are observing a sudden step change in climate. We also want science community to understand how the Paris Agreement long-term temperature goal (LTTG) is interpreted and used in UNFCCC negotiations and for the policy-making community (to understand how the chosen definition of temperature change affect the quantification of global warming to date) Also, how to track these and other indicators of climate change between IPCC report cycles.

• Climate Change and Health, and the Role of Academic Institutions and Future Research Directions

• Focus on co-benefits: designing health and food-system policies in a changing climate

December 8, 2023, from 13.00 to 15.00 | Burkina Faso COP28 Pavilion
The event will focus on health co-benefits and will discuss an evidence base for improving food and health policies in a changing climate. Since the impacts of climate change on health and food security are mostly localised, this event will highlight and quantify the negative health impacts on health, food security, and nutrition that can be attributed to climate change, focusing on Burkina Faso and West Africa. Second, using data from more than 120 countries we will discuss how heat stress and droughts has had an increasingly negative impact on food security, amplifying inequalities and highlighting how climate change-food security hotspots are evolving over time.
Finally, an international panel of experts will discuss the implications of these findings for policies that can reduce food insecurity and undernutrition; and build resilience in lower-income countries.

• Climate risk and security in the Mediterranean

Climate change amplifies extreme weather phenomena that exacerbate pre-existing instabilities, especially in the Mediterranean. A mitigation and adaptation strategy is central for all countries in the region for shared security and prosperity. During this seminar, a diverse panel of experts from intergovernmental organizations, academia, national governments and civil society will elucidate, share insights and propose solutions on this matter.
